I found myself in 2D against the lead of HQ and it was not looking good. I had one spade loser, one or two heart losers, one or 2 diamond losers, and there was only one entry in dummy, so there was a clear risk of losing 3 club tricks.

I won the heart lead, played back a spade. Won the heart return and exited a heart. 3-3 break was a relief.

The defence now erred by playing ace and another club, and all I needed now was to guess the diamonds, which I managed successfully – though Ajay gave me maximum chances to go wrong by not playing the king 2nd time round.

It looked like this will be a good score, there’s nothing we can make. And opponents have a club partial their way.

But.. what I had not considered was that all precision players opened 1 with west hand. That shut out the diamond overcall. Then they played in 1NT and went 1 down. So a lot of NS were scoring 100 vs our 90.

42%.. oh well

Thank you Sandeep. The hands and the problems faced come alive with your narrations. Thinking of the field and par actions and still getting the rough end. Tough.
Very instructive and enlightening thought processes in the ozone layer of bridge.
Let this be the 1st of many chapters to come in a great book !
    All the best.
